Braces Orthodontics in San Diego
Braces Orthodontics
Braces are common orthodontic treatments for teeth straightening.
There are 5 main types of braces available
today:
-
Metal braces
-
Ceramic braces
-
Self-ligating braces
-
Lingual braces
-
Clear aligners such as Invisalign
Metal Braces
Metal braces are probably the most common type of braces because they
have been around for a long time. Due to technological advancements,
metal braces have improved. They are now smaller, more comfortable, more
effective, and work faster than before.
Traditionally metal braces were for children and teenagers but now
anybody can use braces to straighten their teeth.
Metal braces can correct severe cases of teeth crookedness. They use
braces, wires, and elastic ties. Metal braces come in different colors.
Your orthodontist makes adjustments to the wires at your appointments
every 4-8 weeks.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are braces made of clear, tooth-colored material. They
work in the same way as metal braces but are more discreet and less
visible. Ceramic braces are slightly larger than metal braces but they
are not easily noticeable since they resemble your natural teeth color.
Your orthodontist will determine if ceramic braces are right for
you.
Self-ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces are available in metal or ceramic material and
work like metal braces using wires, but what’s different is that they
don’t use elastic ties. Instead, they use clips that hold the wires in
place.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are the least common type of braces. They are placed
behind teeth and require special skills. Lingual braces behind the teeth
are especially well-suited for adults who do not want noticeable braces
but also have complex orthodontic needs. Only a few orthodontists offer
these braces.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are not necessarily braces but they are used to
straighten teeth. The most popular clear aligner brand is Invisalign.
Invisalign aligners are loved by many as they are:
-
Clear and transparent
-
Removable
-
Faster than braces in some cases
-
Less interruptive to a patient’s current lifestyle
